Over my years of painting, there has
been a considerable amount of experimentation in my work.
The basic Landscape Paintings in oil are
painted without a brush, but with a broad palette knife, which is a
flexible, steel blade giving the artwork a bold textured
finish. The architecture pieces are primarily done with
the palette knife. In the early 1970's, and early
1980's, my work took on a very abstracted form. This has
manifested itself into the Impressionistic Landscapes of the
early 2000's, several of which are painted with acrylic and/or
mixed medium.

Sept.05 - Strasbourg, France -
So enchanted by the city, and a particular young man, my
daughter decided to return to Strasbourg to live and work, at
least for a short while. Insisting I visit again to "see"
where she lives, it didn't take much encouraging to get me
there. This visit was an artistic sojourn. Walking
on probably every street and laneway on the island (my daughter
lives near the cathedral) led to several extremely detailed pen
and ink sketches and journal entries. Each of these
sketches took several hours, returning on subsequent days to
complete the work. Sitting beside the river, in a cafe or
on the edge of a garden box in order to "do my thing" leaves me
with memories a bus tour could never provide. I am so
thankful that I was able to wander with the French as opposed to
viewing them through a bus window. |

July 2004: Meldrum Bay,
Manitoulin Island, Northern Ontario - Pristine, clear, cold
waters of Lake Huron at the mouth of Georgian Bay is where the
large ferry Chi-Cheemaum ingests the vehicles at Tobemory to
cross this waterway, ending at South Baymouth on Manitoulin
Island. The passage is studded with Islands with their
white shale rock at the base of tall, straight evergreen; many
inhabited and some with a singular lighthouse at a point near
the channel. The waters were Prussian blue, aqua green,
shimmering mauve and shades in between. I was thinking of the
Group of Seven when viewing this landscape and waterways. |

June 2004: A trip to Windsor,
Ontario was especially interesting to me as it was the first
time since 1971. What a change. Along the river
there are walkways and parks, with an attractive road running
from downtown Windsor all the way to Tecumseh. The Detroit
skyline sparkled in the brilliant sunshine with unusual clouds
framing them, and at night the lights in the buildings looked
magical reflecting in the St. Clair River. This has
inspired me to do a small series entitled "Sky Lines". I
just need the time to develop the group. |

April 2004: Strasbourg, France
- My daughter was studying at the University of Strasbourg
for her 3rd year, and she asked me several times to come and
visit. What a delight. I was struck by the
architecture, particularly the many narrow streets, some leading
to interior courtyard with cafes and restaurants. The -
I'll - River runs through the centre of Strasbourg and divides
at the island where Petite France, the old district and
the Cathedral are situated. Along the waterways there are
the restaurant barges and lowered walkways like those near Notre
Dame in Paris. I have so much material to work on and am
very excited about this. |

| "Amazing Skies of New Mexico"
August 2003: I was lucky
enough to visit a friend in Vado, New Mexico, on a small ranch
over-looking the desert of the National Reserve and Bishop's Cap
Mountain in the San Andreas Mountains. The evening lights
of Las Cruces could be seen in the valley far below, and in the
daylight there were touches of green made possible by the waters
of the Rio Grande. I was taught to ride two beautiful
horses, Snap and Cody, well enough to venture off-trail in the
desert below the ranch. Being the rainy season, the
sky was magnificent with its cloud formations and the rain
spouts dotted against clear blue. Sunsets were
unbelievably breath-taking. |

"North
Carolina and Back"
April
2003: On my trip to North Carolina in the United States,
corrections to my sketches opened my eyes to a totally
different composition approach for landscape. . . combined
with the blizzard at Flat Rock which quickly changed to early spring.
The trees on the mountain
slopes were just starting to change colour; the willow
trees, being first to show off, standing out, singularly,
yellow against to blush of reds and grays on
the hillsides. . . I was mesmerized by the landscape. . .
.These 6 pieces, I share with you. |

"Exploring West Cornwall" September 2002 - West Cornwall, United Kingdom:
Two glorious weeks were spent as an "Artist in Residence" at
the Great Atlantic Gallery in St. Just-in-Penwith, a lovely
town set in the middle of Land's End, Penzance and the
artistic Town of St. Ives. To explain the beauty of West
Cornwall would have me rambling on for some time. I was
able to walk to footpaths which take you over stiles, passing
red Devon bulls, wandering through farmers yards, following
country lanes with wild black raspberries waiting to be plucked
and down through the valleys to the seaside. Following is some of the work
completed on this amazing part of the
world.
An exhibit with seven
British artists was at the Great Atlantic Gallery, St.
Just-in-Penwith, West Cornwall, UK during July/August
2003. See the web site http://www.greatatlantic.co.uk/
Follow the prompts: Map Works Gallery - Archive -
(26July/15August 2003) Summer Special - Roxanne
Jervis.
Work from this collection is on exhibit at
the Kor Gallery, Kitchener,
Ontario Aug.6th-Sept.11th, 2004; and the Great Atlantic Gallery in St. Just-in-Penwith, Cornwall,
England. |
